Convention visitors forcibly removed from camp site and expelled from the city
Travellers site remains

The camp that had been set up for visitors to the D.I.Y convention in Freiburg (south Germany) was evicted on Friday (28.07.06). At around 4 pm more than 50 police vans moved into the area and quickly cordoned off the area (estimation of police numbers difficult, but at least 500). The Police special units then moved into the camp after the inhabitants had been instructed to pack their belongings together and leave the site. Before leaving the site the identities of the visitors were controlled. Those coming from outside of Freiburg were ordered to remain outside of the city, those from Freiburg have been instructed not to return to the site till Monday night.
Although the proceeding went peacefully from the side of the conference visitors the police were very insistent that they pack as quickly as possible, and sporadic use of force was applied.
The travellers site, which was in the middle of the camp was circled off by the police and no one was allowed to enter or leave without police permission. This camp was not evicted. Although it did come to disputes at the main entrance and the police showed that if they found it necessary that they would enter the site. This was demonstrated at one point, and in a very surreal manner, when five police persons in riot gear slid into the site using a children's chute before being chased away by the camps inhabitants.
During the eviction three people were arrested and processed by the police.
Although the city of Freiburg had decide to “tolerate” the external conference camp during the weekend, this agreement was terminated due to “various disturbances within the city”.
This reached a peak when in the previous night it came to a disturbance in front of the autonomous centre (KTS). This was triggered when police moved in on a graffiti artist. This led to a conflict between KTS visitors and the police, one member of the police was injured and had to be operated due to an eye injury. Both sides accuse the other of provocation.
The D.I.Y conference will be running till Sunday with various workshops and a reclaim the streets billed for Saturday.
